However, over time your door handle can lose its grip, become loose, or look old and worn out. This is a good indication that it's time to replace the door handle. One of the first signs that your door handle needs replacing is when it becomes difficult to operate. This is a serious issue as you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door and put you and your family at risk. It is also a good idea to replace the handle on your door if it is damaged or broken. A damaged or broken door handle is dangerous, especially for elderly and children members who may struggle to open it. They may get trapped. It's a good thing that it's simple to fix a damaged door handle by replacing the old one. The majority of modern door handles are standard size and so they will fit on any door. If you are not certain that your new door handle will work, take off the old one and measure its housing holes. This will let you buy the right size door handle. The easiest method to take off the door handle you have been using is to unscrew it from the door itself. Usually it is a matter of using a screwdriver. Some door handles come with a cover plate which hides the screws that mount them. You will need to remove the cover plate to gain access to the screws. Once you've removed your old handle, take note of the way the spindle is attached to ensure you are able to be sure to align it when you install the new one. You can also remove the door handle by depressing the latch mechanism. You can use a screwdriver to remove the door handle. However, you will have to locate the small latch, which is located on the edge of the trim piece. After you have removed the latch, unscrew the handle from the strike plate and then remove the latch from the door edge. Removing the Strike Plate You'll have to replace your latch plate when replacing the handle. It's the part that is the one that holds the hole in which the latch of the door hooks when the door is closed. The new handles will come with two latch plates which are a circular and a rectangular plate (see the above diagram which illustrates the components of the door handle). If you have a rectangular latch plate, replace it with an oval one. This will allow the latch to hook onto the strike plate and make the handle easier. The first step is to loosen the screw that's holding the latch plate in place. The screws are often quite tight and require a fair amount of force to loosen them. If you are able, it could be helpful to have another person assist with this part. Once the screws are removed, the latch plate will slide out of the door easily. If it's stuck or won't move, use a small nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This may help free the plate up. Now, you can proceed to creating the new door strike plate to be installed. Attach the latch plate to the doorjamb using the wood screws that were included with the new handles. Don't over tighten your screws because this could damage the strike plate. If you're not sure whether the latch plate is in the proper position, try closing and then opening the door to see if it closes and latches correctly. If it does not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate up or down, or forward or back until the door locks correctly. If the door is still jiggling or moving, you may need to increase the size of the latch hole in the strike plate. This is more frequent with older doors, but can happen due to wear and tear, hinge mortises that are too narrow or not the right size for the latch, or from a broken or damaged strike plate that is damaged or broken. If this is the case you can use a metal file instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate. Take off the Latch The latch is a curved metal piece which slides in and out of a hole on the inside of your door. When you turn the handle, it pushes this latch forward, allowing you to open the door. It also catches a hole on the door's frame so that the door is closed. If your door is wiggles when you close it, replacing the latch may be all you need to correct the issue. The screws that hold the door latch are difficult to see however, you can put a screwdriver in a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. Once you've removed the trim plate, it'll be simple to take off the latch and the remaining bolts that hold the spindle and latch in place. If the latch won't be released it is suggested to use a paper clip or a tool to spring it loose from the handle mechanism. Insert the item into the slot for the latch that is recessed. gently twist or jiggle it until you feel the latch and handle begin to separate. It is possible repeat this process a few times before you are able to remove the latch. Once the old latch is removed it should be possible to slide the new latch into the slot with no issues. Make use of the new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers. Check the backset of the current handle (the distance between the centre of the large hole on the door's front and the edge) before installing the new handle. Check that the latch size of the new handle is in line with the measurement. If you're replacing the latch or handle, or if your old lock cylinder is damaged then you will need an entirely new one. If you're not replacing the locks the new latch should fit in your existing recess and will work just fine with the keys you have currently.
